The 2018 Water and Natural Resources Tour will explore the North Platte River from Seminoe Dam in Wyoming, to the shores of Lake McConaughy near Ogallala, Nebraska. The tour will visit reservoirs and hydroplants operated by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.

Two multi-purpose projects provide irrigation to land in the North Platte Valley between Alcova, Wyo., and east of Bridgeport, Neb., generate hydroelectric power at five hydroplants, and provide recreational opportunities and wildlife habitat along the way. But the tour is about much more than irrigation projects.

Participants will learn more about municipal water supplies at the Casper municipal water facility; it will enter the gates of the Sinclair Oil Refinery in Sinclair, Wyo., to learn more about turning crude oil into refined products; participants will visit UNL’s West Central Research & Extension Center to hear about the latest research on irrigation efficiency and efforts to protect Nebraska’s water quality; and more.

The North Platte Basin has long been one of the most popular destinations for the Water & Natural Resources Tour. For those who are familiar with the Platte River in Nebraska (and even those who aren’t), visiting the upper reaches of the Platte Basin is “bucket list” material.
