2007 Water Jamboree Set for April 25-26
Can you name the main processes in the hydrologic cycle?
School children attending the Water Jamboree at Harlan County
Reservoir on April 25 and 26 will know, and they’ll
learn many other facts about water after attending the Water
Jamboree at Harlan County Reservoir on April 25-26.
A special guest will be Attorney General Jon Bruning, who
will visit the South-Central 4-H Camp at 10 a.m. on April
25. The attorney general will observe the activities and
present the Water Jamboree’s planning committee with
a $3,000 check to help support efforts to educate the area’s
youth about the importance of our water resources. The funds
are part of an environmental lawsuit settlement and are dedicated
to environmental education.
Each year since 1993, the planning committee (comprised
of representatives from the event’s sponsoring organizations)
organizes a fun and educational day for fourth- through sixth-grade
students from schools located in the Tri-Basin Natural Resources
District and the Lower Republican Natural Resources District
in south-central Nebraska, and Smith and Phillips counties
in north-central Kansas.
Students will be involved in many hands-on interdisciplinary
water activities related to aquatic life, recreational uses,
water quality, non-point source pollution, irrigation, historical
aspects of water, plants and water, and how water quality
affects wildlife.
The Water Jamboree is a cooperative effort by the University
of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension, Kansas State Research and
Extension, The Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation
District, Lower Republican Natural Resources District, Tri-Basin
Natural Resources District, USDA/Natural Resources Conservation
Service, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Events are held at the 4-H camp site on the north side of
Harlan County Reservoir, at the lake’s Gremlin Cove
campground and below the dam. More than 600 students are
expected to attend during the two-day event. Sessions begin
at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 2:10 p.m. on each day.
Oh, and by the way, the answer to the question posed in
the first paragraph is: condensation, precipitation, infiltration,
runoff, and evapotranspiration.
